Vice President, Alternative Project Delivery (APD) Sector Leader
Dean Kaardal is a vice president leading the Alternative Project Delivery (APD) sector for Stantec’s Buildings Business Line. His role focuses on project delivery best practices and developing mutually beneficial relationships on Public Private Partnerships (P3s or PPPs), Design Builds (DBs), and Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) projects. Dean is a professional electrical engineer, 30 years in the industry, and has specialized in the design of large, complex healthcare facilities. Notable projects have included the P3—North Island Hospitals and Kelowna and Vernon Hospitals, both of which involved the building of two new hospitals simultaneously; RCMP E Division Headquarters (Surrey) on the proponent side; Abbotsford Hospital and Cancer Centre (first hospital P3 in BC) on the owner’s side; IPD—Moose Jaw Hospital Replacement; and numerous DBs, with the most recent being the $1 Billion Calgary Cancer Centre.
Having been involved in some of the earliest P3s in Canada, and on both sides of the process, Dean has learned the challenges of alternatively delivered projects and now champions process improvements of these projects in the industry. Dean has spoken at Construct Canada, CDBI (Canadian Design-Build Institute), CHES (Canadian Healthcare Engineering Society), BCEA (BC Electricals Association), Real Property Institute of Canada (RPIC) National Workshop, and YAS (Youth Achieving Success).
